AI Photo Restoration: Bring Your Old Photos Back to Life
Every family has them: shoeboxes of prints going yellow, creased wedding photos, a portrait of a grandparent that's slowly disappearing. Restoration used to require a specialist with a scanner and hours of clone-stamping. AI restoration handles the most common damage in seconds.
What AI restoration can repair
- Scratches and creases — linear damage is detected as anomalous texture and filled in from surrounding detail.
- Fading and color shift — yellowed or magenta-shifted prints are rebalanced toward neutral, believable color.
- Noise and grain — especially in old indoor shots taken on fast film.
- Spots and dust — the specks that scans pick up from the print or the scanner glass.
- Minor tears and missing corners — small damaged areas can be reconstructed; large missing regions remain guesswork for any tool.
Step 1: digitize properly
The scan determines everything. A few rules:
- Use a flatbed scanner at 600 DPI or higher if you can. Phone apps work in a pinch — shoot straight down, in diffuse daylight, without flash glare.
- Clean the print and scanner glass with a soft cloth first; dust becomes "damage" the AI has to fix.
- Save as PNG or high-quality JPEG, not a social-media-sized export.
Step 2: restore with AI
Upload the scan to PrismRetouch as usual. For restoration work, mention the damage type if you use a custom prompt: "repair scratches and creases, correct yellow fading, keep the original color feel." The model reconstructs faces with particular care — eyes, skin and hair are where old photos lose the most.
Step 3: archive the result
Download the restored file and store both versions: the untouched scan is the historical record, the restoration is for sharing and printing. Back both up in two places (cloud + external drive is the classic combo).
Setting expectations
AI restoration is remarkable on scratches, fading and noise. It cannot invent a face that was never captured — a photo that's 90% torn away stays 90% gone. For lightly-to-moderately damaged prints, though, the result is often the difference between a photo nobody looks at and one that goes back on the wall.
